For Immediate Release: November 17, 2003
Portsmouth, NH - As this month marks the
40th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Court TV
will air a special "Forensic Files" episode entitled "The JFK Assassination:
Investigation Reopened." The program, which premieres on Wednesday, November 19
at 9PM ET/PT, features the cutting-edge work of a New Hampshire-based animation
production company. Hatchling Studios of Portsmouth, NH, produced 18 separate
animation sequences that will air on the cable network, which has a reach of
nearly 80 million cable subscribers.
The animations Hatchling produced for the TV
special draw heavily upon the Zapruder film (the amateur movie that is the only
visual documentation of the shooting), along with historical photographs, maps,
and other data, to produce never-before-seen angles, including 5 unique views
of the time of the gun shots. In doing so, the computer-generated images offer
new perspectives on the multitude of theories surrounding the assassination; in
fact, the new data appears to endorse the controversial "single-bullet theory"
by dramatically showing how Oswald could have very well been the lone gunman.
Marc Dole, president of Hatchling Studios (AKA
M2-3D), explains: "By combining the film with other data sources, including
personal interviews with local JFK experts, we were able to create multiple
animations-in only eight days-to yield an extensive recreation of downtown
Dallas on that day. Now, for example, you can see a head-on view of the
president's Lincoln in the motorcade, and you can draw a straight line from the
sixth floor of the book depository to the back of Kennedy's head. We also
produced a view of the president's limo from Oswald's perspective. It's
dramatic, even a bit spooky, but it's also very useful and instructive data."
Although often working under tight deadlines such
as those that existed on this project, Dole prides his company's work on
meticulous attention to
detail-even the shadows in the Dallas streets were
calibrated to astrological data for the date and time of the fateful incident.
As experts in working with industry-standard tools like Lightwave 3D, Maya,
Digital Fusion, After Effects, and Flash, Dole and his company have also
produced animated elements for numerous high-profile clients, including King
Arthur Flour, Fisher-Price, and Bose, as well as their own animated short film,
"Flare," now in production.
